BINGO Saved the Day

“Not every day is going to be a great day, but there is something great in every day.”

I facilitate an after school club for students with IEPs to get additional help in the areas of phonics and math fact fluency. The students range from 1st grade to 6th grade and have a variety of needs. Today was the last day of the 8 week session and this was where my great moment of the day happened.

The students tend to lack motivation when it comes to completing the assignments during club. I mean, I can’t blame them. They spend all day at school learning and then they are expected to participate an additional hour of work targeting areas that they struggle with. It’s exhausting.

At the half way mark we always take a break, once the break concluded I announced that I had a surprise for them, we were going to play BINGO! Ten students who normally do not interact with one another gathered around the table to play. The excitement was written all over their faces! The older students took initiative to help the younger students or the ones with more significant needs. The relationships that were built through this 15 minute game were incredible! I had students who have never talked before working together to help one another. I could not have asked for a better ending to an after school club. This, right here, was my great moment of the day.
